Chris Maher, Director (QLD) within the Retail Investment Services, has bought & sold over A$4b worth of real estate. More than half of these transactions were within the retail sector for ASX listed companies such as Challenger & Vicinity Centres as well as Global IM and Nuveen.
Chris’ expertise ranges from smaller non-discretionary shopping centres (Terrace Central) to large Regional Shopping Centres with mixed-use potential (Bankstown Central).
Chris has also structured close to A$1b of Forward Funding deals across the living and office sectors.
Accomplishments
- Brokered the sale of Marsden Park Shopping Centre on behalf of QIC Global Real Estate (QIC GRE) to HomeCo for $48 million.
- Transaction management for the disposal of a 75% interest ($275m) of Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre.
- Developed the domestic alternate real estate strategy for Nuveen IM that focused on the “living” sector (student accommodation, co-living, multi-family) and delivered on the strategy by acquiring five sites that are currently under construction with on completion value over half a billion dollars.
- I was involved is the largest retail transaction 2016 when VCX disposed of a portfolio of four large shopping centres (Toombul, Clifford Gardens, Forrest Glen & Brimbank) across the East Coast of Australia ($850m) to Mirvac & Blackstone.
- At VCX we acquired a portfolio in Perth, The Shops at Ellenbrook Central sub-regional shopping centre with development potential to construct a Regional SC and Livingstone Market Place ($320m).
- Transaction management for the disposal a 50% interest in Runaway Bay Shopping Centre, large sub-regional ($180m @ 50% interest) and retaining management to a sophisticated UHNW purchaser
- Transaction Management for the disposal of a sub-regional shopping centre (Wodonga Plaza) for c. $45m
- Transaction Management for the disposal of a neighbourhood shopping centre (Terrace Central) for c. $30m
- Transaction management of 161 Collins Street, Melbourne ($350m) including negotiation of long term ground lease and consultant management for future redevelopment (~$100m).
- Transaction management of 70 Eagle Street, Brisbane ($155m) including delivery with in-place financing and subsequent Asset Management.
- Redevelopment of 20 Martin Place including project oversight, budget management, reporting requirements and delivering with pre-commitment leasing (including negotiating +15,000sqm pre-commitment including Apple, ANZ Bank and Telsa).
- Underwriting, investment structure, investor management and transaction delivery of a large portfolio acquisition of Regional, Sub-Regional, and neighbourhood Shopping Centre’s from Centro (Federation/Vicinity) with a combined value of +$600 million ($1.2B at 100%). Shopping Centres included Regional Centres: Roselands & Bankstown, Sub-regional centres: Toormina, Lennox, Sunshine & Karratha.
- Underwriting, investment structure, investor management and transaction delivery of Surfers Paradise Shopping Centre (c. $163m) on behalf of a third party capital (ADIC) which substantially outperformed the business case with +20% returns.

Over the last 24 months, Lachlan has achieved the largest transaction in Australian history with the sale of Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, QLD for $810 million (50% interest). He also secured the largest agency negotiated transaction in Australia at $1.00 billion for the sale of Pacific Werribee and Epping, VIC (50% interest). I am the head of the Retail Investment Services Team in Queensland and on a daily basis, work hand in hand with my fellow retail counterparts in the southern states.
Since joining Colliers International in 2009, I have specialised on the sale of all categories of retail investments being; neighbourhood supermarket based centres, sub-regional, regional, large format retail service centres and tourism retailed retail properties.
For 4 years I was also the Director in charge of the Colliers International Gold Coast office and Head of Colliers Insolvency Property Division.
Over my career I have transacted over 80 properties at a capital value in excess of $3 Billion.
