Bistro Maison changes hands as local restaurateurs look to new future

Colliers International sells restaurant leasehold on Mornington Peninsula

A well-known husband-and-wife restaurant team have sold their business in Mt Eliza on Victoria’s popular Mornington Peninsula as they embark on a project in the region.

Colliers International’s Will Connolly has facilitated the leasehold sale of Bistro Maison as the McCarthys turn their focus to a new establishment on the peninsula.

“Bistro Maison has been sold by a well-known local chef Bernard McCarthy and his operations manager wife, Rachel,” Mr Connolly said. “We experienced high levels of interest in Bistro Maison during the sale campaign and were fortunate enough to present an acceptable offer to Bernard and Rachel within a month of listing.

“The Bistro Maison leasehold has been purchased by local couple, Hans and Annette Went, who plan to transform the space into a traditional Italian restaurant and expect to re-open in about a month once refurbishments have been completed."

The McCarthys also recently surrendered their lease at Salix, located within the Willow Creek vineyard in Balnarring. Willow Creek is a popular wedding and function venue, and there are plans for a hotel to be built onsite.

“We have had restaurants on the Mornington Peninsula for the past 11 years, including our gorgeous little bistro in the Mt Eliza Village, Bistro Maison, for the past five years,” Mr McCarthy said.

“We decided to put Bistro Maison on the market in order to focus on our exciting new venture in Balnarring, Barn & Co, which will be a cellar door winery and friendly bistro. We are excited to focus on growing and sourcing our own produce and raising chickens in our coop, all on the stunning Mrs Nicks vineyard."

Mr Connolly said there was strong demand for assets such as Bistro Maison in the region.

“Hospitality venues are changing hands quite rapidly on the Mornington Peninsula, with venues such as the Rye Diner and McCrae Pavilion being sold recently,” he said.

“It’s no secret that people on the Mornington Peninsula are passionate about their food, and this is clearly demonstrated in the high standard of service and quality venues in this region are currently providing.”
